Taylor County was founded in 1858 and named after three brothers, Edward, George, James. The Taylor brothers fought and died at the Battle of the Alamo. When the county was organized in 1878, Buffalo Gap was named as the county seat. That was until the Texas and Pacific Railroad built tracks through a town that would later become known as Abilene in 1880. In 1891, Taylor County had its first establishment for higher education when Abilene Baptist College was founded and later renamed Hardin–Simmons University in 1934 in honor of Mary and John G. Hardin.
