Galveston County Texas
Galveston was named in 1783 by Spanish navigator Jose Antonio de Evia to honor U.S. supporters in the Revolutionary War. But it did not become a great port city until 1820. Texas struggled for freedom from Mexico and ownership of the natural harbor at Galveston. But Mexico designated it as a port in 1825 and built a customs house here in 1830. The county was formed by combining land from Harrisburg, Liberty and Brazonia counties. Texas soon joined the United States and Galveston became very important in cotton trade world wide. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 killed at least 6000 people. Already an attractive tourist city it was controlled for a brief time by a crime syndicate. But in the 1950’s this changed and Galveston grew as the NASA Johnson Space Center opened in 1963. State highways 6,87,146 and Interstate 45 pass through Galveston County.
Well known football players Dez and Red Bryant who played for the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks were born here. Galveston and League City are probably best known cities in the county. You may want to check out the annual Wild Texas Shrimp Festival and the Chili Quest and Beer Fest.
