Oneida County New York
Oneida County was founded in 1798 by splitting off from part of Herkimer County. It was named after the Oneida, who were part of the Iroquois tribe of American Indians. In 1848, John Humphrey Noyes founded the very controversial Oneida Community, based on a Utopian religion. This community lasted until 1881 but did give birth to the Oneida Silver Company which designed and manufactured high-end silver sterling silver and stainless steel flatware until they closed their manufacturing facilities in 2005. The largest non-governmental employer in Oneida County is now currently the Turning Stone Casino Resort which is operated by the Oneida Indian Nation of New York.
The population during the 2000 census was 235,469 people with over 90% of that being White. Over a third of the available acreage is designated for farmland and the output of field crops, vegetable and milk and dairy products is constantly growing.
Cities in Oneida County include Rome, Utica, and Sherrill and the county map is dotted with a wealth of smaller villages and towns. Currently Oneida County is also home to the Steuben Memorial State Historic Site, the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site, and Fort Stanwix.
