XA, XB Kicks it off!
The Scion brand was made to appeal to younger generations in 2003 when they launched in California. Scion may only be a marque of Toyota, but the brand has managed to sell over a million units since its inauguration, averaging a consumer age of about 29 for its tC model. Originally offering the sub-compact Scion xA and the compact xB, these two vehicles were available at 105 dealerships solely in the state of California.
Since Scion’s initial launch, the brand has almost dominated the market for compact and sub-compact vehicles, selling a whopping 173,000+ units in 2006 (Over 79,000 being their tC model), and it has released a variety of models catering to their young consumer base. After Scion released their first two models in 2003, they stepped it up in 2004-2005 by producing the first limited-edition varieties of their original models and their tC model. In the following years Scion would continue with their limited-edition line-up to include the xA and xB RS 1.0 in 2004, the xA RS 3.0 in 2006 and the xB RS 9.0 in 2012 to name a few.
Ample market research was conducted with younger generations to produce Scion’s “Pure Price” model in order to provide a streamlined and negotiation-free process. This model would ensure that every customer could expect to pay the same price that they saw on any advertisements for the vehicle or vehicle accessories they were buying. Along with the “Pure Price” model, Scion introduced the mono-spec trim to their market. Scion’s vehicles would all be sold with the same base accessories allowing their consumers to indulge in a massive variety of after-market accessories to completely customize their vehicles to their own unique tastes, though not every dealership followed the guidelines of this model and some would add accessories to their units in order to mark up the price.
After the huge hit in 2006, Scion’s sales began to decline into 2009 when the brand’s sales were almost cut in half. The final model was released in 2015 (Not including the two limited-edition models released in 2016) the iM hatchback was the last attempt to revitalize the brand before its discontinuation was announced Feb. 3, 2016. Select models will be re-branded for Toyota’s 2017 line-up.
