The city of Laguna Niguel is part of Orange County in the southern part of California. It became the 29th city added to Orange County in 1989. Laguna is Spanish for lagoon, and Niguel came from the name of a Jueneno Indian village named Nigueli.
Laguna Niguel was once a sheep ranch called Rancho Niguel when California became a territory of Mexico in 1821. Through grants, ownership of the ranch went to Juan Avila in 1842. It was patented at over 13,000 acres. In 1890, Lewis Moulton purchased 8,000 acres in Niguel Ranch. Part of those acres were turned into what is now, Laguna Niguel. Modern day Laguna Niguel has a population over 60,000.
