Huntington Beach, California Information
Huntington Beach, California was incorporated in 1909 and today is the 16th largest city in California with around 200,000 residents. In 2006, the U.S. Patent and Trademark office awarded the trademark title of “Surf City, USA” to Huntington Beach. The city is located on the shore of the Pacific Ocean approximately 38 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The city itself is situated on a mesa along the Pacific Ocean within view of the Santa Ana River. The Gabrielino Indians who maintained a large camp as well as burial grounds on the mesa originally inhabited the area. The Spanish later claimed the area. From 1901 to 1904, an unsuccessful attempt was made to turn the area into an ocean side resort. Real estate developers at the time invested large amounts of money in electricity, telephone and rail infrastructure. Only in 1919, when oil was discovered in the area, did their luck turn around, and the oil business thrived in the area until the 1950s.
The climate is a little cooler than some areas of California due to its ocean side location. The average high temperature in August is 84˚F, while the average low in January is around 47˚F. There are many unique cultural and historical offerings in the area such as The Surfers’ Hall of Fame and Walk of Fame, the International Surfing Museum as well as the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Its close proximity to Los Angeles allows residents to enjoy all the professional sporting events available in the area.
