Garden Grove, California was incorporated in 1956 and today is the 21st largest city in California with approximately 170,000 residents. It is located in the southern part of the state eight miles northeast of the Pacific Ocean and about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Attorney and physician Alonzo cook, who moved to the area around 1874, named the area around 1881. He moved into a small farming community that had a few hundred residents at the time. He provided the area with several community institutions as well as a name as well as donating land and his time. The first population growth started in 1905 when the railroad was built to provide transportation for not only crops but people as well. After World War II, the area had another population increase, with the last big increase occurring in the 1970s of a large number of Vietnamese and Korean immigrants.
