Costa Mesa, California was incorporated in 1953 and today is home to about 110,000 residents. Costa Mesa is located within walking distance of Newport Beach and about forty-five minutes southeast of Los Angeles. The southernmost border of the city is only a mile from the Pacific Ocean. The area was originally grazing land by the San Juan Capistrano Mission. During the 1880s, many attempts were made to settle the area and create a community, but they all failed. It was originally known as the town of Harper, but was then renamed in 1920 to Costa Mesa, which means “table land” in Spanish.
The climate of the area is warm with average high temperatures in the summer months of around 90˚F and high temperatures during the winter months are usually around 65˚F.
